The Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF) provides capital grant support for organisations developing new and existing low-carbon heat networks to help accelerate the transition towards a decarbonised heat sector in England and Wales.
The key objectives of the fund are to achieve carbon savings and reduce the carbon intensity of heat supplied, increase the use of low-carbon heat in both new and existing heat networks, and support market transformation across investment, supply chains, skills, procurement, and delivery capacity to strengthen the future low-carbon heat network sector.
The Green Heat Network Fund supports the commercialisation and construction of new low-carbon heat networks, including cooling supply, as well as the retrofitting and expansion of existing heat networks. The fund is designed to address challenges in decarbonising the UK’s heat sector by supporting the wider adoption of low and zero-carbon heat technologies.
The programme provides capital grant funding through different application routes, including commercialisation-only support, commercialisation combined with construction support, and construction-only support. It supports activities required to prepare and deliver heat network projects, including technical, legal, commercial, financial, planning, procurement, environmental assessments, infrastructure development, and construction activities.
Eligible construction support covers the development of heat networks, including access to low-carbon heat sources, energy centres, thermal storage, pipe installation, heat interface units, metering, and control systems. Projects must demonstrate a low-carbon design approach and meet the scheme’s required criteria.
The GHNF is open to organisations from the public, private, and third sectors that are responsible for developing heating and cooling networks in England and Wales. Eligible applicants must be legal entities, meet the required scheme metrics, and provide the necessary supporting documentation as part of the application process.
The fund is delivered through Triple Point Heat Networks Investment Management on behalf of the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. The programme supports the growth of the heat network market and aims to create a sustainable low-carbon heat network sector prepared for future carbon reduction targets.
