Deadline: 24-April-2026
The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has opened a call for Animation Slate proposals valued at R7.5 million over three years to support sustainable production companies in South Africa.
The key objectives of this funding initiative include cultivating sustainable and viable production companies, assisting companies to identify and produce films that demonstrate audience awareness in both South African and international markets, finding original ways of reaching audiences nationwide, increasing the marketing and export of South African film products globally, and promoting greater cooperation between production and distribution companies.
The Animation Slate funding is designed to strengthen production companies by providing operating capital for development and cornerstone financing for production over a defined period. This approach reduces uncertainty in running a business and aligns with international best practices aimed at building long-term industry sustainability. The slate specifically targets Tier 1 and Tier 2 production companies, as defined in the NFVF Funding Policy.
Tier 1 production companies are those with a proven track record of developing and producing three to five theatrically released feature films. Tier 2 production companies include filmmakers with industry experience who have produced one to two feature films, television fiction, documentaries, short films, or commercials and are looking to expand into feature film, animation, or documentary production.
Eligible companies must demonstrate prior experience in producing animation content. This includes work such as animated short films, feature films, series, television content, or commercial animation projects, ensuring that applicants have the capacity to deliver on the proposed slate.
The total funding of R7.5 million will be distributed over three years, with R3 million allocated for the development of at least four television concepts and three feature film concepts, with a cap of 25% for overhead costs. The remaining R4.5 million will support the production of one television pilot and one feature film animatic at the first draft stage.
To qualify, applicants must be production companies that meet specific criteria. These include being classified as Tier 1 or Tier 2, being 100% South African owned with at least 51% black ownership and management, and holding valid BBBEE certification and a valid Tax Status Pin. Compliance with tax regulations is mandatory, and non-compliance at the time of verification will result in disqualification. Additionally, applicants must present at least three development concepts in which they hold a minimum of 51% intellectual property ownership, along with a clear strategy for skills development.
This funding opportunity reflects NFVF’s commitment to strengthening the animation sector and supporting companies that can contribute to the growth and global reach of South African storytelling.
