The Research and Demonstration Initiatives program under the BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund provides financial support for projects that strengthen agricultural production and agrifoods economic activity across the Peace region of British Columbia.
The program focuses on supporting new product and practice viability through studies and demonstrations that test innovative products and methods, as well as demonstration initiatives that encourage the adoption of practical agricultural solutions. It also aims to support a broad range of organizations that directly benefit agriculture in the Peace region through flexible project eligibility, regional decision-making, and an efficient application process.
The BC Hydro Peace Agricultural Compensation Fund was established to benefit agricultural producers, industry associations, educational institutions, and eligible non-profit organizations working to enhance the agricultural sector in the Peace region. The fund is administered by Northern Development Initiative Trust and overseen by BC Hydro, with governance provided by a board representing the regional agriculture industry. As a sustainable endowment, only a portion of the available funds is distributed annually to ensure long-term support for agriculture in the region.
Under this initiative, eligible applicants may receive grants of up to CAD 300,000, with funding capped at CAD 100,000 per year and covering up to 70% of the total eligible project budget. Applicants who have previously received funding must complete their existing project, submit all required reports, and receive final payment before applying again, unless they are recognized key producer associations.
Eligible applicants include corporations, cooperatives, individuals, partnerships actively engaged in agriculture in the Peace region, including new entrants and young agricultural operators, registered non-profit agricultural organizations, regional industry associations, agencies, boards and councils, and educational institutions conducting research directly related to the Peace region.
Eligible projects include studies that assess the viability of new agricultural products and practices, projects that demonstrate innovative production methods, and other demonstration initiatives designed to improve agricultural knowledge and practices within the region.
