Visa Climate Tech Hackathon 2024

Deadline: 21 June 2024

Submissions are now open for the Visa Climate Tech Hackathon 2024 where innovation meets sustainability!

The mission is to revolutionize the use of payments data, to create groundbreaking solutions that drive sustainable outcomes and enable consumers to make informed choices.

This isn’t just about environmental consciousness; it’s about harnessing the power of data to create a world where money management and reducing environmental impact go hand in hand. Join them as they innovate for a better, more responsible future, turning payments data into a tool for positive change. Reshape the landscape of environmental responsibility together, one transaction at a time.

Objectives

  • At this hackathon, you will develop solutions that target one, or a combination of, the following:
    • Empower informed decision-making to enable more sustainable choices
      • Research has shown that consumers today are looking for more and more innovative ways to manage their money – what if they could help them do that while reducing their environmental impact at the same time? A win for the consumer and the planet! How can they bring payments and data together to contribute to a future that is both financially and environmentally responsible?
    • Increase consumer awareness and trust in Climate Tech solutions
      • How can they help consumers make informed decisions when it comes to how they spend their money and how that impacts the environment? By improving the access to and accuracy of data related to spending, they have a huge opportunity to give consumers a sense of agency and empowerment when it comes to managing their environmental impact.
    • Accelerate sustainable finance
      • Sustainable finance can mean many things, but ultimately it’s about embedding sustainable practices and principles into all the products and services, and data is a great way to do that. How can the intersection of data and payments help here?
  • The Visa Climate Tech Hackathon is a unique platform where you can collaborate with Visa mentors and fellow innovators who share your vision. Together, they’re on the brink of developing tech-driven solutions that can make a significant, positive impact. This is your chance to get involved!

The Challenges

  • At the Visa Climate Tech hackathon, we invite you to explore innovative solutions that can provide individuals with a complete view of their financial data, thus enabling them to make more sustainable choices that can impact their financial journey. Using the data, APIs and resources provided, tailor your solution to fit one of 3 challenges:
    • Groceries for Good
      • Most people visit grocery stores weekly, if not more frequently. These stores have evolved to serve consumers beyond everyday essentials and have become integral to the lives. However, this evolution has brought forth a myriad of challenges, including food waste, excessive packaging and emissions resulting from transportation, among others.
    • Remixing Data and Recommerce
      • Many consumers have likely engaged in some form of recommerce purchasing activity without realizing it – renting, reselling or repairing are just a few examples. There is so much more to be done to bring more focus to recommerce and establish it as part of a consumers’ buying or selling experience.
    • Energizing Data for Efficiency
      • Whether you own your home or rent it, the cost of maintaining and managing a household can be substantial. Homeowners require access to financial resources and energy-saving solutions to improve their homes’ energy efficiency. While there are subsidies and government grants available in some cases, these may not be readily accessible to everyone.

Benefits

  • By participating in this hackathon you will:
    • Have access to multiple financial data sets, including anonymised and aggregated card and open banking data, allowing you to find new ways to support consumers achieve their sustainability goals.
    • Gain access to industry experts and mentors who can provide valuable guidance and insights throughout the hackathon, helping you refine your ideas and solutions.
    • Connect with like-minded individuals, fellow innovators and professionals in the sustainability and tech sectors, expanding your professional network.
