Apply now for Restoration Grant Program (Canada)

Deadline Date: June 14, 2026

The Athlii Gwaii Legacy Restoration Grant Program aims to protect and restore the natural environment and ecological integrity of Haida Gwaii’s land, air, and waters through collaborative partnerships and community-driven initiatives.

The program focuses on job creation, local business opportunities, all-island benefits, restoration and protection of Haida Gwaii’s land, air and waters, leveraging external funding, collaboration with development groups to maximize funding, community consultation, restoration of streams, riparian areas, forests, forest habitats and marine shores, as well as supporting future environmental protection through research, local tree nurseries, local fish hatcheries, tree planting and spacing.

Funding is available to Haida Gwaii-based organizations that meet the Gwaii Trust Society residency requirement of operating within the community for at least five consecutive years. Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, local governments, sole proprietorships, and incorporated companies. Proposed projects must be located in Haida Gwaii.

The grant program supports capital projects that use proven practices and avoid unintended environmental consequences. Applicants are required to demonstrate project readiness through feasibility studies, design and implementation plans, business planning, and identification of required permits and approvals. Applications must also outline other capital funding contributions, including own-source revenues, in-kind support, debt financing, or grants from other agencies.

Projects will be evaluated through a comprehensive review process that considers restoration outcomes, island well-being, technical feasibility, financial viability, project management capacity, and community engagement. The assessment is designed to ensure funded projects are practical, sustainable, and capable of delivering meaningful benefits to Haida Gwaii communities.

The application process consists of two stages. The initial stage requires applicants to provide a project description, funding request, alignment with program goals, and a summary of planned activities and deliverables. Following review by the AGL Project Specialist, eligible applicants may proceed to the second stage, which requires detailed budgets, project schedules, business plans, operations and maintenance plans, team qualifications, feasibility studies, supporting resolutions, design documentation, and permit information.

Eligible projects will undergo due diligence and review by the Athlii Gwaii Legacy Committee before selected applications are forwarded to the Gwaii Trust Society Board of Directors for final approval. Funding recommendations will be based on eligibility requirements and application review scores, while funding conditions, reporting requirements, and disbursement timelines will also be considered during the approval process.
