Deadline Date: June 14, 2026
The Athlii Gwaii Legacy Renewables Grant supports the transformation of Haida Gwaii’s electrical systems from fossil fuel dependence to clean and renewable energy through a collaborative approach that promotes sustainability, energy security, and community empowerment.
The program focuses on supporting the transition of Haida Gwaii’s fossil fuel-dependent electrical grids to renewable energy sources, promoting the productive and sustainable use of natural resources including land, air, and water, creating or updating Community Energy Plans (CEP), and advancing renewable energy technologies such as micro-hydro, wind, tidal, solar photovoltaic systems, co-generation biomass projects, energy storage and control subsystems, transmission systems that contribute to greenhouse gas reductions, and proven combinations of renewable technologies.
The grant program is designed to strengthen sustainability, security, and sovereignty across Haida Gwaii by encouraging job creation, supporting local business opportunities, delivering benefits across the islands, increasing self-sufficiency, leveraging external funding, fostering collaboration among development groups, and promoting community consultation.
Funding is available through three streams. Stream 1 supports Community Energy Planning activities, including the development of new Community Energy Plans and updates to existing plans that are more than five years old. These activities may include community engagement and planning processes that help communities prepare for a cleaner energy future.
Funding is available through three streams under the Renewables Grant Program. Community Energy Planning projects can receive up to $75,000 for the development of a new Community Energy Plan and up to $40,000 for updating an existing plan, with funding covering up to 100% of eligible project costs. Small Projects supporting clean energy generation or energy efficiency initiatives can receive up to $300,000, also covering up to 100% of eligible costs. Major Projects that have an existing electricity purchase agreement or impact benefit agreement may receive funding for eligible capital and non-capital activities, with support available for up to 100% of project costs.
Stream 2 supports Small Projects that contribute to renewable energy generation and energy efficiency. Eligible activities include the installation of small-scale clean energy projects for residential or community buildings, as well as demand-side management initiatives such as energy performance modeling, energy-efficient building design studies, home and building assessments, retrofits, renovations, heat pump installations, and other measures that improve energy conservation and efficiency.
Stream 3 supports Major Projects that have existing electricity purchase agreements or impact benefit agreements and are expected to generate substantial revenue and employment opportunities for Haida Gwaii. Eligible expenses may include final engineering work, contract labour, equipment procurement, construction materials, technology acquisition, and other costs required for project implementation.
Funding is available to organizations based in Haida Gwaii that meet the Gwaii Trust Society residency requirement of operating in the community for at least five consecutive years. Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organizations, local governments, sole proprietorships, and incorporated companies. All proposed projects must be located within Haida Gwaii.
