The European Commission is inviting grant applications to support research and innovation activities that contribute to the transition and sustainable development of the coal sector.
The focus areas of this call include supporting the just transition of the coal sector and regions, improving health and safety, and minimising the environmental impacts of coal mines in transition.
This funding topic covers pilot and demonstration projects within the coal sector. Pilot projects are intended for the construction, operation, and development of installations on an appropriate scale, while demonstration projects focus on the construction and/or operation of industrial-scale installations. Both types of projects are designed to bridge the gap between research and innovation.
Funded activities are expected to begin at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 4-5 and progress to TRL 7-8 by the end of the project. The projects should demonstrate practical advancements and support the implementation of innovative solutions relevant to the coal sector.
Applicants are required to include an assessment of the expected industrial, economic, social, and environmental benefits of their proposed projects. This assessment should demonstrate the potential impact and value of the activities being undertaken.
The total funding available under this call is €2,880,000. Eligible applicants include legal entities such as public or private bodies, undertakings, public authorities, research organisations, higher or secondary education establishments, and other legal entities that carry out research and technological development activities or make a substantial contribution to such activities.
Applicants must be established in eligible countries, including European Union Member States, overseas countries and territories associated with the EU, and non-EU countries that are associated with the Research Fund for Coal and Steel (RFCS).
