The focus areas, of the program include building the evidence base that consumer advocates can use to influence energy policy, regulatory, and market reform, ensuring the perspectives and experiences of consumers, particularly those facing disadvantage or vulnerability, are reflected in research, creating pathways for research to translate into advocacy impact, supporting systemic changes that deliver fairer, more affordable, and more accessible energy outcomes, supporting small-scale projects with targeted objectives, modest budgets, and a clear scope, producing new evidence, data, or insights that strengthen advocacy, addressing issues that matter to energy consumers, particularly those experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage, and supporting projects designed to influence advocacy, regulatory processes, or system change.
The Small Research Projects grant stream has been established to support research that responds to the rapid changes taking place in energy systems. It aims to generate timely and credible insights that help place consumers at the centre of energy policy and decision-making.
The program funds small-scale, research-focused projects that produce new evidence and practical insights to strengthen consumer advocacy. These projects are expected to have a clear and achievable scope while making a meaningful contribution to improving consumer representation.
The program also supports research that reflects the experiences of energy consumers and creates opportunities for findings to contribute to advocacy and broader system change.
Eligible applicants include not-for-profit organisations within Australia whose purpose or mandate allows them to advocate for household and small business energy consumers, including social enterprises registered as not-for-profit organisations, as well as bona fide research organisations with a public purpose.
