Requests for Proposals: End Plastic Pollution International Collaborative (EPPIC) Grant Program

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources is seeking applications for its EPPIC’s Grant Program that address upstream and midstream plastic pollution solutions that align with EPPIC’s mission and eliminate waste across the plastic lifecycle.

Led by The Ocean Foundation (TOF), the End Plastic Pollution International Collaborative (EPPIC) grant program will provide financial resources to in-country projects focused on location-appropriate upstream and mid-stream interventions supported by knowledge based in science, Indigenous, traditional, and/or other sources as appropriate. These grants will support projects that align with EPPIC’s mission to galvanize global action to significantly reduce plastic pollution and advance solutions to eliminate plastic waste across the plastic cycle.

Funding Information

  • Up to $150,000 will be awarded through these RFPs; projects should submit proposals requesting no more than $150,000 total. The number of grants given will be determined based on the amount each project is awarded.
  • Multi-year grants will be paid in installments with payments after the initial payment tied to quarterly financial reporting requirements. The installment amounts and timing will be negotiated between the awardee and EPPIC.

Project Categories

  • Plastic Waste Reduction in Ghana and Senegal
    • Projects will be up to 2 years in length and focused on projects that reduce or eliminate the need for plastics by using alternatives regardless of sector or industry. Projects should focus on one or more of the following, however, if you have a promising project that aligns with EPPIC’s mission and focuses on location-appropriate upstream and mid-stream interventions supported by knowledge based in science, Indigenous, traditional, and/or other sources as appropriate they encourage you to apply.
      • Implementing extended producer responsibility (EPR)
      • Replacing existing plastics with alternative materials and bioplastics
      • Research and development of alternative materials to plastics.
      • Development and implementation of reuse/refill systems and platforms.
      • Women-Led Innovation in Plastic Alternatives.
      • Empowering Women in Circular Economy Leadership.
  • Redesign, Reuse, Refill in Kenya and South Africa
    • Projects will be up to 2 years in length and focused on materials and packaging redesign and reuse/refill solutions, regardless of sector or industry. Projects should focus on one or more of the following, however, if you have a promising project that aligns with EPPIC’s mission and focuses on location-appropriate upstream and midstream interventions supported by knowledge based in science, Indigenous, traditional, and/or other sources as appropriate, they encourage you to apply.
      • Materials and product redesign to eliminate plastic products and formats that cannot be reused, recycled, and have a high probability of leakage.
      • Redesign packaging to enhance reuse, recycling, and minimize waste.
      • Reuse/refill systems.
      • Behaviour change research and interventions.
      • Women-Led Innovation in Plastic Alternatives.
      • Empowering Women in Circular Economy Leadership.

Geographic Focus

  • Proposals for Plastic Waste Reduction will be accepted for projects based in Ghana and Senegal
  • Proposals for Redesign, Reuse, Refill will be accepted for projects originating from and based in Kenya and South Africa.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Plastic Waste Reduction in Ghana and Senegal
    • Grant recipients can be Micro to Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), individuals, NGOs, academic institutions, private entities, or governments in Ghana and Senegal that are eligible to receive grants from United States government funds. Religious organizations are not eligible for grants. Preference will be given to organizations that are owned and operated by local community members particularly women, individuals who live and work in the community of project focus, and/or sub-national governments in the focus country to increase the benefits derived from the project for the communities they represent. All organizations must be legally registered to operate in Ghana.
  • Redesign, Reuse, Refill  in Kenya and South Africa
    • Grant recipients can be Micro (MSMEs) to Medium Enterprises (SMEs), individuals, NGOs, academic institutions, private entities, governments in Kenya and South Africa, or national R&D institutions that promote, Incubate, and advance scalable solutions to industry and society that are eligible to receive grants from United States government funds. Religious organizations are not eligible for grants. Preference will be given to solutions that are proposed and operated by local entities, MSMEs, SMEs, proposers who live and work in the localities of project focus, and/or sub-national governments in the focus country to increase the benefits derived from the project for the communities they represent.
