Deadline Date: September 16, 2026
The European Commission is now accepting grant applications to support research projects in the coal sector under the Research Fund for Coal and Steel framework.
The focus areas of this topic include supporting the just transition of the coal sector and regions, improving health and safety, and minimising the environmental impacts of coal mines in transition. There is no annual priority specified for this topic.
This topic concerns RFCS Research Projects (RPJs), which involve investigative or experimental work aimed at acquiring knowledge that contributes to achieving specific practical objectives in the coal sector.
Research project activities are expected to begin at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 1-3 and progress to TRL 4-5 by the end of the project. These projects are designed to support early-stage research and development that can later be advanced into more applied innovation.
Each proposal must include an assessment of the expected industrial, economic, social, and environmental benefits. This ensures that the research outcomes demonstrate clear value and relevance to the coal sector transition process.
The total funding available under this topic is €7,000,000.
Eligible applicants include legal entities such as public or private bodies, undertakings, public authorities, research organisations, higher or secondary education establishments, and other organisations that carry out or contribute to research and technological development activities.
Applicants must be established in eligible countries, including European Union Member States, overseas countries and territories associated with the European Union, and non-EU countries associated with the Research Fund for Coal and Steel.
