Focus areas include increasing fruit and vegetable intake among pregnant and postpartum women and their families, increasing household food security, improving maternal health outcomes, improving birth outcomes, increasing enrollment of pregnant and postpartum women in nutrition education programs, expanding access to produce prescription interventions including vouchers, and strengthening community partnerships to improve access to healthy foods.
The program, supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), provides funding for organizations to create community-based nutrition initiatives that address nutrition insecurity and health-related risks affecting maternal populations.
The Maternal Produce Prescription Program will provide grants of up to $500,000 per award, with a total expected funding of $13 million in FY 2026.
Eligible applicants include state and local governments, tribal organizations, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private or for-profit organizations. Applicants must submit letters of support from both a healthcare partner and a community-based organization partner involved in serving maternal populations.
The program aims to strengthen connections between healthcare providers, community organizations, and local food systems by integrating nutrition support into maternal healthcare services. Activities may include nutrition education, produce access support, and approaches that help reduce barriers to healthy food availability.
The initiative recognizes that access to nutrient-rich foods during pregnancy and the postpartum period supports maternal health, fetal development, and recovery after birth. Through coordinated partnerships and nutrition-focused interventions, the program seeks to improve diet quality and support healthier outcomes for mothers and families.
