Road and traffic safety is a critical global concern, and this opportunity aims to support the development of sustainable space-based services and applications that improve traffic management, incident detection, predictive safety solutions, and the protection of road users.
The focus areas include enhancing information exchange, improving road design, signage and maintenance to reduce accidents, improving road safety by optimising traffic flow, implementing measures to protect non-motorised road users, and improving International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) survey completion.
Road traffic crashes cause significant loss of life worldwide, with approximately 1.35 million people dying each year according to the World Health Organization. The increasing pace of urbanisation and the growing number of vehicles on roads have created a greater need for advanced solutions that can reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities.
Changing mobility patterns, including the growing presence of micromobility and automated vehicles, are reshaping transport systems and creating new challenges for traffic management and infrastructure. These developments require updated safety solutions that can adapt to emerging modes of transport.
Industry is also working towards improving the safety of vehicles and surrounding ecosystems through digital, connected, and autonomous mobility solutions. The use of artificial intelligence, IoT sensors, and cloud computing provides opportunities to develop accurate, scalable, and cost-effective road safety systems.
This Road and Traffic Safety Call for Proposals aims to develop solutions that leverage space-enabled technologies to enhance safety and traffic management, improve the collection of critical data, and better protect vulnerable road users. The opportunity offers funding of up to €600,000, limited to eligible costs, for companies intending to develop space-enabled services and products related to the Road and Traffic Safety sector.
