Deadline Date: December 31, 2026
The United Nations Development Programme is inviting applications to support startups developing technology solutions to improve safety, transparency, and sustainability in the African mining sector.
The focus areas include mine safety technology, workforce protection, artisanal and small-scale mining formalization, mineral traceability, resource governance, environmental monitoring, climate resilience, lithium-ion battery development, remote and autonomous mining operations, geotechnical risk management, mine dewatering, ventilation systems, and market access for mining-related businesses.
The programme is designed to support startups working across the mining value chain to address critical challenges such as unsafe working conditions, environmental degradation, opaque supply chains, and limited community benefits from mining activities. It aims to promote innovative solutions that make mining safer, cleaner, and more transparent.
Selected startups receive structured incubation support through accredited incubators within the timbuktoo network. They also gain access to mentorship, investors, and a continental founder network through a digital platform designed to support learning, guidance, and investment readiness.
The programme encourages participation from African-based startups or those building solutions for African mining markets. Applicants are expected to have a working prototype or MVP, a committed team, and a clear problem-solving approach within the mining value chain. Women-led and youth-led startups are particularly encouraged to apply, along with founders from underserved or mining-affected communities.
