The European Commission has announced a major opportunity for innovative on-site robotic and automated solutions and techniques, designed to advance more sustainable and less disruptive building renovation and construction.
The core focus areas, objectives, and priorities are as follows: Measurable reduction in overall time spent on site for renovation and construction, compared to current best practices. Measurable increase in resource efficiency, as well as improved accuracy (designed vs. as-built), of on-site renovation and construction works, compared to current best practices. Measurable reduction in noise pollution, air pollution (e.g., particulate matter) and other pollution caused by on-site renovation and construction works, compared to current best practices. Increased health, safety and productivity for construction and renovation workers. Improved working conditions and opportunities for upskilling, lifelong learning, and digitalisation adoption in the workforce. Demonstration of robust, flexible, and interoperable robotic solutions that are usable in real-world renovation and construction environments. Facilitation of wider and faster market uptake of innovative robotic solutions in the construction sector, including for energy efficient and deep renovation. Contribution to the overall objectives of achieving a highly energy-efficient and climate neutral European building stock by 2050.
The call invites the development and demonstration of advanced robotics and automation for on-site building processes, with an emphasis on comprehensive experimental research and validation through full-scale prototype buildings. Projects are required to show tangible improvements in efficiency, resource use, environmental impact reduction, and workforce welfare. A strong interdisciplinary approach is encouraged, particularly involving social sciences and humanities experts, to integrate societal needs into project design and implementation. The programme also expects replication potential and procedures that enable scalability and impact across Europe. The legal and financial framework emphasizes lump-sum eligible costs and outcomes that contribute to broader European strategies for climate neutrality and digital transformation in construction. Funding is available for selected projects under this call, with the European Commission estimating an EU contribution of around EUR 5.00 million per project and a total indicative budget of EUR 15.00 million.
