Deadline Date: August 27, 2026
Applications open for the Networking & Marine Research Communication Awards for funding to support international research communication, networking, and dissemination through conferences, workshops, training, and media production.
The programme is closely aligned with national and international marine strategies, such as Ocean Knowledge 2030 and the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters by 2030, and is designed to underpin research cooperation and the development of international consortia.
Eligibility for these awards is open to legal entities based on the island of Ireland, including higher education institutions, research institutes, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), and NGOs with relevant scientific and technical expertise. Individual researchers—such as postgraduate students, research assistants, and early-stage postdoctoral researchers—may apply through their organisations. Applicants may not receive more than two awards per calendar year, and organisations are limited to three applications per event. All payments are made to the applicant’s organisation, and applications must be submitted at least one month in advance of the event.
Funding is available across three categories: hosting conferences or workshops in Ireland (minimum €2,000, maximum €4,000), researcher awards for event attendance and training (minimum €400, up to €2,000 depending on destination and event type), and marine research communication (minimum €500, maximum €3,000 for open access publications or media production). The Marine Institute does not provide 100% funding for hosting events, and applicants must demonstrate their own contribution. Eligible costs include travel and accommodation for keynote speakers, venue hire, registration fees, training course fees, publication costs, and media production expenses, with specific limits and requirements for each category.
Applications are externally assessed on four equally weighted criteria: benefit to the recipient or host institution, contribution to national or international policy objectives, justification of collaboration and dissemination, and value for money. Only costs incurred after the award is granted are eligible for reimbursement, and successful applicants must submit a report and all relevant receipts within one month of the event. The Marine Institute may offer support at a lower rate than requested, and all outputs must acknowledge the funding provided. Applications must be submitted via the Research Information Management System (RIMS), and incomplete or incorrectly submitted applications will not be considered.
