The Understanding Science funding program supports projects that make scientific findings and research results accessible to a broad public through innovative communication methods that strengthen trust in science and encourage interest in science education and careers.
Focus areas include communicating scientific findings and results to a broad audience, making science and technology more understandable through innovative approaches, building trust in science, and inspiring more people to pursue science education and careers.
The program provides funding support for projects focused on science communication and public engagement. Eligible costs include personnel expenses, external services such as development work, knowledge acquisition, speaker fees, investments, materials and equipment, machinery or equipment purchases, licenses, intellectual property rights, and travel expenses for guests such as moderators or speakers.
The maximum funding amount available is €60,000 per project, with a maximum funding rate of 75%. Projects must have a minimum size of €10,000 and can have a maximum duration of two years.
Eligible applicants include companies, universities, universities of applied sciences, associations, non-university research institutions, and organizations from all industries.
An advance payment of up to 50% of the approved funding amount is possible. Applicants must also submit a semi-annual progress report during project implementation.
Projects are evaluated by an independent jury, which reviews submissions and recommends projects for funding. A women’s bonus of €5,000 is available if the project is led by a qualified woman.
Applicants must submit a fully completed online funding application, an application confirmation, a de minimis declaration, a final annual financial statement or an income and expenditure statement.
The application process includes developing a project idea, receiving consultation from the Vienna Business Agency, selecting the appropriate funding opportunity, developing project content, and submitting the project online.
