The Environmental Stewardship and Climate Change Program supports farms, Mi’kmaq farming communities, and community pastures in reducing environmental risks, improving sustainability, lowering greenhouse gas emissions, and adapting to climate change through the adoption of Beneficial Management Practices (BMPs).
The program focuses on soil and crop management, integrated pest management, grazing management, waste management, climate resiliency, improved soil health, water quality protection, biodiversity enhancement, greenhouse gas reduction, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Eligible applicants include registered farms, community pastures, and Mi’kmaq conducting farming activities in Mi’kmaw communities. Farms must be actively farming, registered under the Farm Registration Act, generate at least $30,000 in annual eligible farming income, and have a current Environmental Farm Plan.
Applicants can receive funding covering up to 50% of eligible project costs, with maximum annual funding ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 depending on farm income. Eligible activities include weather stations, anti-insect barriers, weeding equipment, manure management systems, fuel and chemical storage improvements, livestock cooling systems, and infrastructure protecting species at risk.
Projects will be assessed based on their environmental benefits, climate adaptation impact, and ability to reduce risks to soil, water, and habitats.
