Deadline Date: January 13, 2026
The Dutch Film Fund is currently accepting applications for its Realization Research and Experiment Program.
An important funding opportunity is available for independent filmmakers working in the field of artistic and experimental film. The fund provides significant financial support to help bring innovative audiovisual projects to realization and to strengthen the professional film and visual arts landscape.
Eligible projects may receive a contribution ranging from €50,000 to €100,000. In cases of exceptionally high artistic quality, the board may decide to award a higher amount. The fund’s contribution can cover up to 85% of the total production budget, making it possible for filmmakers to secure the majority of their financing through this scheme. An additional earmarked contribution of €5,000 may also be requested to support distribution.
Applications are open to independent production companies that operate as legal entities and have been established for at least two years in the Netherlands, the European Union, the European Economic Area, or Switzerland. These companies must be actively involved in the ongoing production and exploitation of films or other audiovisual works.
The production company must be represented by a producer with proven experience. This producer must have been primarily responsible, as majority producer, for the realization and release of at least one independent, non-commissioned artistic or experimental film within the professional film, television, or visual arts sector. The producer may not be the same person as the director or screenwriter of the project.
Directors who produce their own films may apply independently, provided they can demonstrate sufficient professional production experience. Experience gained solely through education, competitions, or self-directed learning is not considered sufficient.
In these smaller-budget cases, producers who meet the entry requirements for development within this category may also submit an independent development application. This flexibility ensures that both emerging and experienced filmmakers have access to meaningful support for artistically ambitious projects.
