New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance is inviting applications for its Deckhand to Captain Training Program 2025.
The program is designed for experienced commercial fishermen who want to take the next step toward owning and operating their own vessel.
The program focuses on the business side of commercial fishing—teaching you the finance, regulations, and ownership skills needed to successfully own and operate your own fishing vessel as a business. It does not include hands-on captain training or vessel operation.
Benefits
- Free Training – Learn everything needed to run a fishing business.
- $5,000 Stipend – Given upon successful completion and approval of a business plan.
- Mentor Stipend – Your mentor will also receive a $2,000 stipend.
- USCG-Approved Safety & Survival Training – Includes a 2-day Drill Conductor course (FREE).
Eligibility Criteria
- The Program is open to applicants from Southern Maine, New Hampshire, and Northern Massachusetts.
- Must have at least 3 years of commercial fishing experience
- Must be serious about becoming an owner-operator
- Must be committed to attending in-person classes in Portsmouth, NH
