The U.S. Department of State has announced the English Language Teaching and Learning Program to strengthen English language teaching capacity and expand sector-specific English instruction for teachers, students, and emerging professionals in Uzbekistan.
The program focuses on strengthening English language teaching capacity, teacher professional development, English for Specific Purposes, direct in-person English language instruction, communicative and learner-centered teaching methodologies, sector-specific English for space, critical minerals, rare earths, energy, high technology, business and trade, agriculture, media, and security, increased access to quality English education, promotion of American culture and entrepreneurial spirit, and improved English proficiency for professionals working in priority sectors.
The funding opportunity supports projects that provide specialized, in-person English language teacher training alongside direct English language instruction for students and emerging professionals. The initiative aims to address the shortage of highly proficient English teachers by equipping educators with the skills needed to deliver sector-relevant English instruction at the B2 level and above.
The program will provide cooperative agreement funding ranging from $200,000 to $500,000 per award, with a total funding pool of $500,000, subject to the availability of funds. The anticipated project period is 12 months.
The program is intended for nonprofit organizations, including civil society organizations, think tanks, public international organizations, and governmental institutions. Selected organizations will recruit and train English language teachers at the secondary and post-secondary levels while also delivering contextualized English courses for participants working in priority professional sectors.
Projects should include teacher training, professional development workshops, mentoring, participant recruitment, direct classroom instruction, cultural programming, and English language learning activities that improve participants’ ability to engage with U.S.-linked professional environments. Most program activities must be delivered in person, with close coordination and oversight from the U.S. Embassy Public Diplomacy Section and RELO Tashkent throughout implementation.
