The Green Municipal Fund is offering funding support for integrated planning initiatives that help municipalities in Canada transition toward a net-zero future through innovative and collaborative planning approaches.
The programme focuses on net-zero transformation, municipal climate planning, greenhouse gas reduction, integrated planning approaches, sustainable infrastructure, stakeholder engagement, climate innovation, operational planning, low-carbon community development, multidisciplinary collaboration, policy and bylaw development, sustainable municipal systems, and long-term climate action implementation.
The funding supports planning exercises that establish strong foundations for achieving net-zero emissions within municipalities and communities. These plans are expected to demonstrate innovation in areas such as partnerships, planning scope, stakeholder engagement, and data analysis while creating actionable pathways that lead to measurable and long-term environmental outcomes.
Eligible plans must contribute to significant long-term greenhouse gas reductions and apply integrated planning approaches that bring together multiple disciplines and sectors in a collaborative process. The programme encourages municipalities and partners to develop coordinated plans that align environmental, social, technical, and economic objectives while supporting sustainable community development.
The initiative also requires applicants to include clear operationalization strategies outlining how proposed plans will be implemented in practice. These strategies should identify implementation requirements such as projected capital and operational funding needs, governance considerations, and alternative engineering or infrastructure standards required to support net-zero objectives.
Net-Zero Transformation plans are expected to move beyond conceptual planning and create pathways for tangible results, such as the development of net-zero neighbourhoods, implementation of innovative municipal policies, or adoption of new bylaws and sustainability frameworks. The programme encourages forward-looking approaches that strengthen municipal readiness for long-term climate action.
Eligible applicants include Canadian municipal governments such as towns, cities, districts, regions, and local boards. Municipal partners may include private sector organizations, municipally owned corporations, regional and provincial service organizations, non-governmental organizations, not-for-profit organizations, and research institutions such as universities. Indigenous communities may also apply as lead applicants if partnering with a Canadian municipal government or operating under a shared service agreement related to municipal infrastructure, climate change, or adaptation.
The programme provides grants covering up to 50 percent of eligible project costs, with a maximum funding amount of CAD 200,000.
