The Ocean Knowledge 2030 Research Call invites proposals from eligible legal entities in Ireland for research projects addressing key marine science and innovation topics, with funding available for both desk studies and medium-scale projects.
The call aims to advance sustainable use of ocean resources, support policy development, and foster a climate-neutral blue economy through targeted research aligned with national and international marine strategies. The strategy coordinates marine research and innovation investments at the national level, aiming to optimize impact, enable sustainable use of ocean space, and foster a climate-neutral blue economy. It outlines fifty-one actions to be periodically reviewed and updated with stakeholder input.
This research call seeks proposals on eight targeted topics, including ecosystem-based approaches to changing fish stocks, greening aquaculture, sustainable wild seaweed harvesting, impacts of marine policy on seafood production, implications of the UN Agreement on Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction, sustainable transitions for coastal passenger boats, citizen-led marine science, and socio-economic impacts of developing commercial ports. Projects may be funded as desk studies (12–18 months) or medium-scale projects (24–36 months), with corresponding funding levels.
The objectives of the Marine Institute’s Marine Research Programme are to build research capacity, enable knowledge sharing and technology transfer, increase competitiveness for sustainable economic growth, protect marine resources, inform public policy, and raise public awareness of maritime heritage. Research priorities support sustainable economic growth, promote innovation, protect marine ecosystems, and inform governance and regulation of Ireland’s marine sector.
Eligible applicants include higher education institutions, research institutes, public research bodies, nonprofit organisations, and private companies with relevant scientific and technical expertise. Applications may be submitted by a single organisation or a partnership of up to three partners. Coordinating applicants must be based on the island of Ireland, while organisations from other jurisdictions may participate only as contributing partners and must provide specialised expertise not available in Ireland.
