The Energy Management – Increased Flexibility in the Distribution Network for Households program supports the rollout of communication-enabled and automated energy management systems to improve energy efficiency, increase the use of renewable energy, reduce costs for households, and enhance the efficient use of electricity networks.
The program focuses on the rollout of energy management systems, automated and communication-based control of electricity consumption, storage and generation facilities, energy efficiency, improved use of renewable energy, positive environmental and cost effects for individual users, increased flexibility in the distribution network, improved utilization of public infrastructure, transparent energy flows, increased energy literacy and energy awareness, automated use of dynamic electricity and grid tariffs, flexibility marketing, power limitation, reduced peak demand and feed-in, improved network capacity utilization, better integration of electrified heating and mobility, and enhanced communication and automation across the energy system.
Up to €4.9 million in funding is available through the Climate and Energy Fund under the “Energy Management – Flexibility in the Distribution Network” program. Of this amount, up to €2.45 million is specifically allocated for private households. The funding supports the purchase, installation, and configuration of communication-enabled, automated energy management systems that meet the required minimum functional specifications.
The program is designed to help households manage electricity consumption, storage, and renewable energy generation through automated and communication-based systems. These systems are intended to improve energy efficiency while creating environmental and financial benefits for individual users. At the same time, they contribute to better utilization of electricity networks and increased integration of renewable energy within the overall energy system.
For households, the use of energy management systems provides greater transparency of energy flows, making it easier to identify opportunities for energy savings and efficiency improvements. The systems also support increased use of self-generated renewable energy and enable users to benefit from automated responses to time-variable or dynamic electricity and grid tariffs, flexibility marketing, and power limitation options that can help reduce electricity costs.
At the energy system level, communication-enabled automation improves the ability of connected systems to respond to market and network signals. It supports the reduction and shifting of peak electricity demand and feed-in, enables flexible electricity consumption during periods of high renewable energy availability, and contributes to more efficient use of existing grid infrastructure. This also facilitates the integration of additional electrical loads resulting from the electrification of heating and mobility while strengthening energy awareness among users.
The program is open to private individuals with a standard household grid connection at network level 7. Applicants must install a communication-enabled, automated energy management system capable of controlling a combination of at least two eligible technologies. These include renewable electricity generation systems, electrical energy storage, charging stations for electric vehicles, and heat pumps or electric water heaters used together with hot water storage tanks.
Funding is available for the installation of energy management systems that control existing energy consumers and producers as well as for systems installed alongside the expansion or new acquisition of eligible technologies. Supported combinations include photovoltaic systems with charging stations, heat pumps, or electrical energy storage, as well as combinations involving electrical storage, charging stations, and hot water storage systems.
