Deadline Date: September 22, 2026
The European Commission is seeking applications to support innovative projects that transform woody residues into sustainable bio-based chemicals and materials while strengthening forest-based value chains and circular economy practices.
The initiative focuses on increasing the availability of bio-based chemicals and materials derived from woody residues, enhancing the sustainability of forest-based value chains through collaboration with local forest owners and cooperatives, and improving the end-of-life management of bio-based products in alignment with circular economy principles.
Projects are also required to adopt a multi-actor approach by collaborating closely with local forest owners, cooperatives, and sector associations. They should optimise biomass supply chains, including sourcing, storage, and transport, and incorporate the Safe and Sustainable by Design framework to assess the environmental and safety aspects of developed materials and products. Complementarity with past and ongoing research and innovation projects under Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe, and BBI/CBE JU is also essential.
The total budget for this call is €170,760,699, with €14 million specifically allocated for projects focusing on bio-based chemicals and materials from woody residues. Eligibility is open to any legal entity regardless of country of establishment, including entities from non-associated third countries and international organisations, provided they meet Horizon Europe requirements.
Applicants must register in the Participant Register to obtain a Participant Identification Code (PIC) and complete validation before grant agreement signing. Affiliated entities, associated partners, and, in exceptional cases, entities without legal personality may participate under specified conditions. EU bodies and the Joint Research Centre may also be involved, subject to the call’s provisions.
