Deadline Date: October 01, 2026
The European Commission is inviting applications for a new initiative aimed at strengthening advanced digital skills to support the integration of artificial intelligence in healthcare systems.
The initiative focuses on expanding education and training in artificial intelligence in health, fostering interdisciplinary academic programmes, strengthening collaboration between higher education institutions, vocational education and training providers, research organisations, businesses, and digital health stakeholders, supporting the deployment of AI technologies in healthcare, addressing gaps in academic training provision, promoting AI readiness among healthcare professionals and organisations, contributing to EU policy objectives under the AI Continent Action Plan and Apply AI Strategy, enabling participation in the European network of AI-powered advanced screening centres, and enhancing workforce capabilities to improve healthcare efficiency and patient outcomes.
This funding opportunity aims to address the growing gap in advanced digital skills within the healthcare sector by supporting the design and delivery of specialised training programmes. These programmes will be jointly developed by academic institutions, industry players, and research organisations to ensure relevance and practical application in real-world healthcare settings.
A key component of the initiative is the identification of learning needs among target audiences, including healthcare professionals, managers, and technical experts such as data scientists and software developers. Based on these insights, tailored training programmes will be developed, offering varying levels of technical depth to suit diverse learning requirements.
The project will also result in the creation of a comprehensive training catalogue that includes detailed course structures and timelines, which will be regularly updated based on participant feedback. Training courses will be delivered at least quarterly, particularly to members of the European network of AI-powered advanced screening centres, while also remaining accessible to a broader audience.
To enhance visibility and accessibility, all training programmes will be integrated into the Digital Skills and Jobs Platform through a dedicated landing page. This platform will showcase both ongoing and upcoming training opportunities, helping to connect learners with relevant educational resources.
In addition, the initiative encourages alignment with existing European health data infrastructures such as HealthData@EU and other related platforms, ensuring that training programmes build upon and complement ongoing digital health efforts across the region. Collaboration with other EU-funded projects and programmes will further strengthen the impact and coherence of the initiative.
The project will conclude with a comprehensive analysis evaluating the effectiveness of the training programmes and measuring improvements in participants’ skills. Emphasis will be placed on achieving high participation rates, successful completion outcomes, and promoting gender balance across training cohorts.
The total estimated call budget is EUR 12,500,000, of which EUR 7,800,000 is specifically allocated to the topic Advanced Digital Skills for AI Uptake in Health.
