Deadline Date: May 15, 2026
The FY2026 1st Term Grant for Artistic City supports collaborative artistic and cultural projects in Tokyo to strengthen the city’s global cultural presence and community engagement.
The program focuses on promoting Tokyo’s appeal through high-quality and innovative artistic projects, fostering inclusion and sustainability by enabling participation across diverse groups, encouraging projects that address social and environmental issues through art, supporting initiatives that ensure long-term cultural development beyond one-time events, and advancing interdisciplinary projects that integrate art with science, technology, and digital innovation.
The Grant for Artistic City is designed to subsidize a portion of expenses for artistic and creative activities conducted in Tokyo by multiple organizations working collaboratively. These may include festivals, exhibitions, or multi-genre art projects that bring together various participants and stakeholders. By encouraging partnerships and shared responsibility in planning and execution, the grant aims to create a vibrant cultural ecosystem that enhances Tokyo’s attractiveness as a global arts hub.
Eligible projects must be organized or co-organized by multiple organizations with clearly defined roles and active involvement in management and implementation. These projects should be open to the public and demonstrate significant cultural impact, whether through large-scale regional revitalization efforts, innovative artistic expressions, or programs that utilize local cultural resources to generate widespread community engagement.
The grant provides financial support covering up to half of the eligible project expenses, with a maximum limit of 20 million yen. Additional support may also be provided for specific cost categories within defined limits.
Eligible applicants include organizations based in Tokyo such as arts organizations, private companies, NPOs, universities, and executive committees, provided they meet governance, financial, and operational requirements. Individual applicants and certain public-sector entities are not eligible, although they may participate as partners in projects.
Projects must align with the program’s collaborative nature and public benefit goals. Activities such as single-organization events, commercial sales-focused exhibitions, political or religious promotions, or projects that are financially self-sustaining without the need for subsidies are not eligible for support.
