The Defence Ready Initiative (DRI) offers an important opportunity for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Western Australia to strengthen their capabilities within the defence sector. Administered by Defence West within the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, the program provides targeted financial assistance to help businesses enhance their capacity, competitiveness, and ability to supply products, services, and works that meet the evolving needs of Australia’s defence industry.
The initiative is designed to help Western Australian SMEs build resilience and readiness to participate more effectively in defence supply chains. Through this support, businesses can invest in the systems, processes, and technologies needed to meet Defence standards and increase their competitiveness in a highly demanding sector. The program’s flexible approach also allows the Department to assess applications on a case-by-case basis, ensuring that funding aligns closely with strategic priorities and the specific needs of applicants.
Successful applicants can receive up to $20,000 in funding, excluding GST, to assist with eligible project costs. The grant will cover up to 50 per cent of approved expenses, meaning applicants seeking the maximum amount must demonstrate a project investment of at least $40,000, excluding GST. This co-funding structure encourages SMEs to actively contribute to their own growth and readiness while benefiting from government support.
Eligibility is limited to for-profit organizations that have been operating for at least two years, including at least one year in Western Australia. Businesses must be registered for GST for at least 12 months prior to applying, hold an active Australian Business Number (ABN), and employ fewer than 200 people. Applicants must also have their principal place of business in Western Australia and commit to remaining based there for at least 12 months following submission. Previous recipients of DRI funding are not eligible to apply in this round.
The Defence Ready Initiative represents a valuable opportunity for Western Australian SMEs to expand their footprint in the national defence supply chain. By enhancing local industry capability, the program contributes to building a more robust, innovative, and self-reliant defence sector that supports both regional and national economic growth.
