The MAENA project in Italy supports farmers in adopting sustainable water management practices to improve irrigation efficiency and climate resilience in agriculture.
The focus areas, of the MAENA project include sustainable water management in agriculture, restoration of the small water cycle, improved access to water resources, climate change adaptation in farming systems, adoption of innovative irrigation management solutions, and capacity building for farmers in water conservation practices.
The MAENA project, co-funded by the Interreg NEXT MED Programme 2021–2027, aims to demonstrate effective approaches for restoring the small water cycle as a method for improving agricultural water conservation and resilience to climate change impacts in the Mediterranean region. It focuses on strengthening farmers’ capacity to adopt sustainable water management practices.
The programme is designed to engage farmers in the Puglia region through two support pathways. One pathway involves on-farm solutions with sensor networks and decision support systems for irrigation management, while the other focuses on training and access to resources related to sustainable water cycle restoration practices.
Funding support under the project can reach up to 22,000 euros per beneficiary. The initiative is open to individual farmers, family farms, agricultural enterprises, and farmer associations including cooperatives and producer organisations operating in the Puglia region.
Women-led and youth-led farms are particularly encouraged to apply, reflecting the programme’s focus on inclusive participation in sustainable agricultural development.
