Deadline Date: October 01, 2026
The Shevchenko Foundation offers grant support to organizations and collectives that preserve, promote, and develop Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage through visual arts initiatives that enrich Canada’s cultural landscape.
The Foundation’s priorities include supporting projects that contribute to enriching the Canadian experience through Ukrainian Canadian culture, strengthening the Ukrainian community in Canada, sharing Ukrainian Canadian cultural contributions with diverse audiences on community, regional, or national levels, demonstrating financial capability and sustainability, and employing new technologies and partnership models in the creation, production, dissemination, and preservation of Ukrainian Canadian heritage culture. Assessment criteria focus on integrity, sustainability, excellence, innovation, inclusiveness, public engagement, industry standards, financial viability, realistic budgeting, marketing and distribution planning, organizational capacity, and the overall contribution of projects to the relevance of Ukrainian cultural heritage in Canada.
The Shevchenko Foundation fulfills its mandate by providing grants under four pillars: Arts, Education, Community Development, and Heritage. Within the Arts Pillar, the Visual Arts Sector specifically supports groups and collectives engaged in the creation and exhibition of visual art that reflects Ukrainian heritage and demonstrates a connection to the Ukrainian Canadian experience.
Eligible applicants include Canadian not-for-profit community organizations, artist collectives, registered private businesses whose activities occur primarily in Canada, and Canadian chartered educational institutions. Professional, semi-professional, and amateur groups governed by a board of directors or responsible governing body are also eligible to apply.
Funding is available for projects involving commissioned original artwork by Canadian artists intended for public presentation and engagement, collaborative artistic projects and partnerships, and public non-commercial exhibitions of visual art. Supported exhibition-related expenses may include artist and curatorial fees, installation costs, venue rentals, shipping, insurance, promotion, advertising, and travel. Exhibitions may take place in galleries, public spaces, unconventional venues, or digital platforms. The Foundation also supports professional development opportunities for arts administrators, curators, collections managers, outreach coordinators, and educational staff.
The Foundation gives priority to projects that demonstrate strong feasibility, realistic budgeting, and evidence of financial or in-kind support from additional sources. Applications are assessed on how clearly project goals and skills are articulated, the project’s contribution to Canadian cultural enrichment, public engagement standards, and the applicant’s financial planning and organizational capacity.
Grant applications must be submitted before the project start date. The Foundation may fund up to 50 percent of total project or program costs, depending on available budget resources. Funding cannot be used for general living allowances for participants or ongoing annual operating expenses of arts organizations. Projects extending over multiple years may receive phased funding subject to annual reporting requirements.
Applicants must submit final reports for previously funded projects before applying for additional grants. Organizations working with children under 18 years of age are responsible for complying with youth protection policies within their jurisdictions.
