Applications open for GreenCatalyst Initiative (Tanzania)

The initiative focuses on promoting innovation and sustainability within forest-based value chains, increasing rural employment, unlocking investment in green MSMEs, supporting climate-smart solutions, strengthening forestry-linked enterprises, and encouraging inclusive participation by youth, women, and persons with disabilities.

Selected ventures will receive catalytic grant funding ranging from TZS 10 million up to TZS 100 million. In addition to financial support, they will gain access to tailored technical assistance, including mentorship, business development services, and training in climate-smart innovation and digital tools. The programme also facilitates connections to additional financing opportunities and markets through investor matchmaking and ecosystem engagement platforms.

The initiative supports a wide range of innovation areas within the forestry sector, including sustainable wood products, alternative charcoal solutions, bamboo-based innovations, eco-friendly packaging, essential oils, digital forestry tools, forest-based tourism, agroforestry models, engineered wood products, non-timber forest enterprises, and services such as kiln drying, sawmilling, and tool rental hubs.

They are seeking early-stage or scaling MSMEs that demonstrate innovation and operational traction. Eligible enterprises must be registered and majority-owned by Tanzanian citizens, operate within the forestry value chain, and show clear environmental sustainability and climate-smart approaches. Businesses should be led by or significantly involve youth aged 18 to 35, women, or persons with disabilities, and must have strong business linkages or be based in Iringa, Njombe, Ruvuma, or Lindi. They should also demonstrate a need for catalytic support to expand operations, access markets, or attract investment.
