Apply AI: Piloting AI-based Image Screening in Medical Centres

Deadline Date: October 01, 2026

The European Commission is seeking grant applications to support the development and large-scale validation of cloud-based AI systems for medical image screening in clinical environments to enhance healthcare diagnostics and workflow integration.

The focus areas of this programme include AI and generative AI applications in healthcare imaging, development of scalable cloud-based medical screening systems, clinical workflow integration, cancer and cardiovascular disease diagnostics, data protection and cybersecurity in health systems, regulatory compliance and approval pathways, clinical validation and evaluation, health technology assessment, interoperability with hospital IT systems, and establishment of European networks for AI-powered screening centres. The total funding available under this programme is €9,000,000.

This programme aims to implement trustworthy and secure AI and generative AI solutions for medical imaging analysis within real healthcare settings. It emphasizes the creation of cloud-based systems capable of processing large-scale patient data while ensuring privacy, security, and compliance with European legal and ethical standards.

Projects are expected to demonstrate seamless integration of AI systems into clinical workflows, including compatibility with electronic health records, radiological information systems, and other hospital infrastructure. Clinicians are required to play an active role in validating AI-generated findings to ensure safe and effective use in healthcare delivery.

Each project must generate evidence on the technical and clinical performance of AI systems through validation across large patient datasets, with a particular focus on cancer and cardiovascular applications. The outcomes must also include analysis of cost efficiency and usability to support regulatory and health technology assessment processes.

The programme requires the development of regulatory approval plans covering risk management, clinical evaluation, and post-market follow-up. In addition, strong emphasis is placed on data protection, cybersecurity measures, and safeguarding sensitive health information within secure cloud environments.

Participants are expected to contribute to the creation of a European network of AI-powered screening centres by organising events and workshops that facilitate knowledge sharing, including lessons learned and best practices. Sustainability and long-term adoption plans across Europe are also required, along with stakeholder engagement and dissemination activities supported by measurable performance indicators.

Eligible applicants must be legal entities established in EU Member States, EEA countries, or associated countries of the Digital Europe Programme, including both public and private organisations capable of implementing healthcare AI solutions at scale.
