The Transformative Company Support Programme aims to support high-growth potential companies working in the green economy by providing technical assistance and enabling broader developmental impact across key sustainable sectors.
The focus areas of the programme include renewable energy solutions such as clean energy adoption, energy-efficient equipment and energy auditing services, green chemicals involving bio-based industrial alternatives and sustainable feedstock supply, and e-mobility or EV technology covering local assembly, fleet management, diagnostics, maintenance services, and market-ready EV applications.
This initiative is designed for “transformative companies” that demonstrate scalable business models capable of generating large-scale job creation, increasing local value addition, strengthening sustainable supply chains, and enhancing participation in domestic, regional, and international markets including exports. The programme is implemented within the broader context of supporting Ethiopia’s transition toward a more open, market-oriented economy.
Selected companies receive tailored technical support aimed at strengthening business performance and addressing specific operational constraints. This support may include improving compliance with environmental and quality standards, enhancing operational efficiency, developing new products and services, strengthening supplier systems, and building stronger market linkages and value chain partnerships, including connections to European and German markets.
The programme also supports improvements in management systems and collaboration with industry actors and ecosystem partners. However, it does not provide financial assistance, salaries, working capital, or funding for construction, machinery, or equipment purchases.
In addition to firm-level support, companies participate in joint implementation initiatives designed to create broader developmental impact across the green economy sector. These initiatives aim to generate system-wide improvements beyond individual company needs and are developed collaboratively between selected companies and the programme team.
These broader initiatives may include expanding renewable energy adoption across industrial and commercial facilities, improving industrial energy efficiency through audits and advanced systems, and promoting the use of green chemical alternatives through better feedstock supply and market integration. They also support the growth of e-mobility ecosystems through local EV assembly and service expansion.
Further contributions may include strengthening environmental standards and certification systems through shared industry tools for emissions and energy tracking, as well as promoting inclusive green transition opportunities by enabling access for women, youth, and marginalized groups to participate in green jobs and climate-resilient value chains.
The programme is implemented by the Private Sector Development in Ethiopia Project, carried out by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit on behalf of the German Government in collaboration with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry. It aims to help the private sector take advantage of economic reforms while addressing challenges such as limited finance access, regulatory barriers, and global competition.
