McMaster University has announced a significant funding boost for its Startup Survivor Program and Pitch Competition through a grant from IP Ontario under the Innovation Fellowship Program.
The program focuses on business modeling, prototyping, go-to-market strategy, and pitching to investors, helping participants develop essential entrepreneurial and technical skills while preparing their ventures for launch.
The Startup Survivor Program is designed to support Canadian college and university students as well as recent alumni in launching and growing their business ventures. Through this initiative, participants receive funding, mentorship, and access to resources that help them turn innovative ideas into viable startups within a four-month period. The program runs in person at McMaster University’s Hamilton campus from May to August.
Participants take part in a structured innovation program where they complete five business and technical challenges throughout the summer. Each challenge introduces a new topic and is supported by workshops led by industry experts and mentors. At the end of every challenge, a panel of judges evaluates the participants’ deliverables, provides feedback, and assigns scores that contribute to their overall performance.
The program also emphasizes the importance of building a strong entrepreneurial network. Monthly meetups are organized where participants can exchange insights, ask questions, and connect with fellow founders. In addition, startups receive weekly one-on-one mentorship from the Manager of Student Entrepreneurship, offering tailored advice and business development support.
Participants have access to co-working space at McMaster Innovation Park, allowing them to collaborate and work on their ventures in a dedicated environment. For startups developing hardware solutions, the program also provides access to a makerspace equipped with tools and resources to support product development.
To help founders focus on building their businesses, each participating team receives $10,000 in milestone-based funding. Startups working on smart, sustainable, or autonomous transportation solutions may qualify for up to an additional $10,000 in funding support.
With the new investment, the program is expanding its cohort from 10 to 20 startups, enabling more founders to benefit from mentorship, funding, and entrepreneurial resources. The increase in funding also raises the participant grant from $5,000 to $10,000, helping accelerate the development of innovative ventures.
Eligibility for the program requires at least one team member to be a current student or recent alumni who graduated between Spring 2024 and the present from an Ontario post-secondary institution. Applicants must have an innovative business idea or an early-stage startup with a scalable business model, and startups from all sectors are eligible to apply.
