The Resilient Australia Awards celebrate and promote initiatives that strengthen community resilience to disasters and emergencies across Australia.
The awards focus on building whole-of-community resilience to disasters and emergencies, promoting collaboration and innovative thinking across sectors, increasing understanding and awareness of disaster risk and resilience, encouraging coordinated approaches to reducing disaster risk, empowering individuals and communities to take locally led action, strengthening partnerships between government, community organisations, not-for-profits, industry and other sectors, generating knowledge and insights to improve preparedness and recovery, influencing leaders to integrate disaster risk reduction in decision-making, increasing investment and commitment to resilience building, and supporting sustainable outcomes that recognise social values, diverse voices, and local vulnerabilities and strengths.
The Resilient Australia Awards recognise initiatives that demonstrate resilience in action and showcase projects that help communities better prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. The awards celebrate collaboration between communities, institutions, and the private sector while encouraging innovative solutions that strengthen disaster resilience across the country. The program is sponsored by the Australian Government in partnership with states and territories and is managed by the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience.
The awards include several categories at the state and territory level, including the Resilient Australia Business Award for businesses and the private sector, the Resilient Australia Community Award for community-based organisations and non-government organisations, the Resilient Australia Government Award for state and federal departments and agencies, the Resilient Australia Local Government Award for local governments and their associations, the Resilient Australia Mental Health and Wellbeing Award for initiatives supporting mental health before, during, and after disasters, and the Resilient Australia School Award for public and private pre-schools, primary schools, and secondary schools.
At the national level, the program recognises outstanding achievements through several categories including the Resilient Australia National Award for excellence across projects demonstrating systemic change and significant results, the Resilient Australia National Collaboration and Partnership Award for initiatives involving cooperation between multiple partners or sectors, the Resilient Australia National Research for Impact Award for tertiary institutions showcasing research that enhances disaster resilience, the Resilient Australia National Business Award for leading projects from the business sector, and the Resilient Australia National Community Award for community initiatives recognised at the state and territory level.
Projects considered for the awards demonstrate a strong contribution to increasing disaster risk awareness, supporting coordinated resilience-building efforts, enabling risk reduction across society, encouraging partnerships and collaboration, strengthening knowledge and evidence for emergency preparedness and recovery, and promoting sustainable resilience outcomes that value community strengths and diversity.
