Deadline Date: June 09, 2026
The Medical Devices Fund Programme is a competitive funding initiative aimed at supporting the development and commercialisation of innovative medical devices that improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes in New South Wales.
The program focuses on improving patient care outcomes through the uptake of cost-effective health innovations and advancing solutions that deliver economic, social, and environmental benefits. It provides funding to support the development and translation of medical technologies that demonstrate both feasibility and potential clinical impact. It is structured to encourage innovation that can be integrated into healthcare systems and contribute to improved efficiency and effectiveness in patient care.
Eligible applicants include NSW-based hospitals, universities, research institutes, start-ups, and SMEs with appropriate legal status, financial viability, and rights to commercialise the medical device. Projects must meet the TGA definition of a medical device, demonstrate at least TRL 3, and be primarily based in NSW, covering development, prototyping, clinical testing, and commercialisation activities. Funding cannot be used for excluded costs such as land, infrastructure, or unrelated research, and applicants must show that government support is essential for project delivery.
Funding is provided directly to successful applicants under a total pool of AUD 8.2 million, with individual grants ranging from AUD 500,000 to AUD 5,000,000 based on project quality and assessment outcomes. Payments are made after a funding agreement is signed, with most expenditure required in NSW. Recipients must provide financial reporting and may be required to repay funds if the project achieves commercial success or if funds are not used in accordance with the agreement.
The Medical Devices Fund uses a multi-stage application and assessment process where applicants first submit a Preliminary Application electronically, which is screened for eligibility and assessed for quality before selected proposals are invited to submit a Full Application.
Applications are evaluated by the Fund Expert Panel with support from technical, clinical, and financial experts, and may include interviews, with final recommendations made to NSW Health for Ministerial approval. The process includes strict submission requirements, key deadlines, and a competitive merit-based assessment, with applications graded as investable, potentially investable, or not investable.
