The Shevchenko Foundation is offering grant support to Canadian theatre organizations and collectives that demonstrate a meaningful connection to the Ukrainian Canadian experience while contributing to the preservation, promotion, and development of Ukrainian Canadian cultural heritage in Canada.
The Foundation’s priorities and focus areas include enriching the Canadian experience through Ukrainian Canadian culture, strengthening the Ukrainian community in Canada, sharing Ukrainian Canadian cultural contributions with diverse audiences, supporting financially viable and sustainable projects, encouraging innovation and new technologies in cultural preservation and dissemination, advancing excellence and inclusiveness, supporting theatre production projects, tours, festival programming, professional development workshops, and commissioning original theatre works, adaptations, or translations. Priority is also given to projects that demonstrate feasibility, realistic budgeting, collaboration, partnership, co-production, and mentorship with experienced theatre organizations or arts professionals.
The Theatre Sector of the Arts Pillar provides funding support to Canadian organizations or collectives involved in performance-focused theatre activities connected to Ukrainian Canadian heritage and culture. Eligible applicants include Canadian not-for-profit organizations, artist collectives, registered private businesses operating primarily in Canada, educational institutions, and amateur or professional theatre groups governed by a board or responsible body.
Funding may support theatre productions involving new works or innovative presentations of existing dramatic material, including expenses such as guest performer fees, producer fees, sound and lighting costs, facility rentals, and promotional activities. Theatre group tours within Canada are also eligible for support, including travel and presentation expenses. Festival programming expenses, external mentorship and workshop costs, and commissioning costs for original theatre works, adaptations, or translations may also receive funding.
The Foundation evaluates applications based on the clarity of project goals, organizational and artistic capacity, relevance to the Foundation’s mission, contribution to Canadian cultural enrichment, understanding of current industry standards, innovation, inclusiveness, public engagement, and financial viability. Applicants are expected to provide realistic budgets, demonstrate fiscal responsibility, and explain how projects will remain viable if projected revenues or grant support are reduced.
The Shevchenko Foundation funds up to 50 percent of total project or program costs, depending on available budget resources. Applications must be submitted before the project start date, and funding is not guaranteed upon submission. Grants may cover project-related expenses but cannot be used for general living allowances for participants. The Foundation also supports a balance between established applicants, new applicants, and projects exploring emerging cultural practices.
Organizations applying for multiple grants within a calendar year must first complete and receive approval for the Final Report from previously funded projects. Multi-year projects may be funded in phases, subject to annual reporting requirements and satisfactory progress.
