Deadline Date: May 19, 2026
The European Commission is inviting grant applications to develop and demonstrate an advanced low NOx hydrogen direct combustion propulsion system for aircraft to support cleaner aviation technologies.
Focus areas include the development and demonstration of a low NOx hydrogen combustor at TRL5, achieving a minimum 30% reduction in NOx emissions, ensuring combustor operability and integrity, and the development of an efficient hydrogen combustion engine architecture at TRL4 to enable a viable direct hydrogen combustion aircraft concept.
The project focuses on advancing hydrogen-based propulsion systems by improving combustion efficiency and reducing emissions, contributing to more sustainable aviation solutions. Demonstrating both the combustor and engine architecture at defined technology readiness levels is expected to strengthen the feasibility of hydrogen combustion as an alternative to conventional aviation fuels.
With a total funding allocation of €329,500,000, the initiative supports participation from a wide range of entities. Eligible applicants include any legal entity, regardless of geographical location, including organisations from non-associated third countries and international organisations, provided they meet the requirements set out under the Horizon Europe Regulation and the specific conditions of the call.
Eligible participants may include natural or legal persons recognized under national, EU, or international law, with the ability to exercise rights and obligations or operate without legal personality. This broad eligibility framework ensures global collaboration in advancing hydrogen propulsion technologies.
