The Maritime Administration has announced a funding opportunity aimed at supporting small shipyards with capital and related improvements.
The focus areas of the Small Shipyard Grant Program include fostering efficiency, promoting competitive operations, and enhancing the quality of ship construction, repair, and reconfiguration.
Under this program, a total of $35,000,000 is available, with individual grants capped at $1,000,000. Eligible applicants are small businesses operating a shipyard facility located in a single geographic area, employing no more than 1,200 production employees. To qualify, the facility must be engaged in constructing, repairing, or reconfiguring vessels 40 feet or longer for commercial or government use, or vessels 100 feet or longer for non-commercial purposes. Applicants must be the operating company of the shipyard facility.
Potential applicants are advised that the number of applications is expected to far exceed the available funds, meaning only a small percentage of applicants will receive funding. The program aims to ensure that selected shipyards can improve operational efficiency and competitiveness while maintaining high-quality shipbuilding standards.
