Deadline Date: September 16, 2026
The Innovate UK is seeking applications for its Zero Emission Vessels and Infrastructure Grant Programme to support large-scale clean maritime innovation projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The competition focuses on alternative fuel vessels, alternative fuel bunkering and storage infrastructure within ports, 100% battery electric vessels, vessel charging infrastructure, shore power and port energy infrastructure, and vessel energy efficiency technologies, all aligned with the broader objective of accelerating decarbonisation in the maritime sector while strengthening the UK’s leadership in clean maritime technology.
Projects must demonstrate significant reductions in well-to-wake greenhouse gas emissions and present a clear plan for commercial viability and market deployment. They are also required to involve relevant end users such as vessel operators and port authorities, ensure safe and compliant operations, and collaborate with regulatory bodies. A detailed strategy for scaling the technology post-demonstration, along with knowledge-sharing and reporting commitments, is mandatory.
The total funding available for this competition is up to £150 million in the form of grants. Individual projects must have total eligible costs between £6 million and £60 million, with a maximum grant request of £30 million, and no more than £20 million allocated to a single participant. Funding rates vary depending on project type and organisation size, with industrial research projects eligible for up to 70% funding for small organisations and experimental development projects eligible for up to 45%. Capital costs, including vessels and infrastructure, can receive up to 80% funding until 31 December 2029.
To be eligible, projects must be led by a UK-registered business that either operates independently or collaborates with a UK-registered ship owner, manufacturer, operator, or infrastructure provider such as a port or harbour authority. Collaborative projects must include at least one additional UK-based organisation applying for funding. All participating organisations must intend to exploit the project outcomes within or from the UK, and projects must start by 1 April 2027 while completing all funded activities by 31 December 2029.
