The Standards and Trade Development Facility (STDF) is providing project grants to support developing countries in strengthening sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) systems to facilitate safe trade and improve market access.
The focus areas of the program include improving food safety, strengthening animal and plant health systems, enhancing compliance with international SPS requirements, addressing SPS-related trade challenges, supporting access to regional and international markets, and promoting collaboration between public and private sector stakeholders through partnerships.
The STDF offers funding of up to $1,000,000 for project grants aimed at addressing specific SPS challenges that impact trade. These projects are designed to improve capacity in food safety, animal health, and plant health systems, enabling countries to meet international standards and expand their participation in global markets. The grants specifically target issues that hinder exports or affect imports, with an emphasis on practical solutions that enhance compliance and trade outcomes.
Eligible applicants include public sector entities responsible for SPS policies and measures, private sector organizations such as farmers’ groups and trade associations, and non-governmental organizations with expertise in SPS-related areas. Applications are encouraged to involve collaboration between public and private sectors to strengthen implementation and ensure sustainable impact. STDF partners are also eligible to apply.
Beneficiaries are required to contribute to the project through financial or in-kind support, such as staff time, facilities, vehicles, or other existing resources. Projects must clearly define the SPS problems they aim to address, including how these issues affect access to regional or international markets, and provide evidence of their impact on trade, including affected products and markets.
