The Screen Support Scheme provides support to the development and production of cultural and creative audiovisual works in Malta by providing financial assistance to professionals and independent audiovisual entities across different stages of filmmaking.
The scheme focuses on supporting the scriptwriting stage of audiovisual projects, the development stage of cultural and creative productions, the production of short films with strong cultural and creative content, the production stage of feature films, and the creation of cultural programmes for private broadcasting stations in Malta.
The Pre-Production – First Strand: Scriptwriting supports the early stage of audiovisual projects by funding scriptwriting and related research, including treatments for documentaries, and requires the involvement of an experienced scriptwriter or a script consultant for new writers. The Second Strand: Development supports project development activities such as script development, research, selection of key creative team members, budgeting, defining target audiences, and preparing projects for pitching at markets, festivals, and industry events, specifically for animation, documentary, and fiction projects.
The Third Strand: Short Films provides grants for producing short films in animation, documentary, and fiction formats, encouraging original projects, offering possible mentoring from industry experts, and supporting international co-productions with valid agreements. The Fourth Strand: Feature Film Production funds the production of feature-length fiction, documentary, and animation projects, offering financial support and possible mentoring while also allowing participation in international co-productions with demonstrated collaboration.
The Fifth Strand: Cultural Programmes supports the production of cultural audiovisual programmes for private broadcasting stations in Malta, providing grants and mentoring to encourage high-quality cultural content and enabling international co-productions with formal agreements.
The scheme provides financial grants (funding amounts vary depending on the strand) to support eligible projects across different stages of audiovisual production. The Screen Support Scheme is open to independent audiovisual entities legally registered in Malta and individual audiovisual professionals who are Maltese citizens or who hold a Maltese permanent residence permit, Maltese citizenship certificate, or Maltese passport.
