Deadline Date: February 28, 2026
The Tauranga City Council has launched a Mayoral Relief Fund to provide urgent financial assistance to families, residents, and businesses affected by recent severe weather events.
Through this initiative, Tauranga City Council aims to help the community recover swiftly from the impacts of the severe weather, providing both practical and financial assistance to those who need it most while fostering local resilience and community recovery.
The fund focuses on supporting specific needs of individuals or families directly affected, providing financial and advisory support to locally impacted businesses, aiding in the recovery of Mauao, supporting community and volunteer groups involved in recovery efforts, and bridging gaps while longer-term needs are identified and addressed.
The Mayoral Relief Fund is designed as a flexible, locally administered mechanism to respond quickly to urgent, unmet needs where other support may be delayed, incomplete, or unavailable. By acting alongside the Western Bay Emergency Response Fund—a joint initiative with Acorn Foundation, BayTrust, TECT, Tauranga City Council, and Western Bay of Plenty District Council—the fund ensures that both individuals and community organizations can access timely recovery assistance.
While the fund provides immediate support, it does not cover damage or losses already addressed by insurance, EQC, or other funding streams, general maintenance unrelated to the weather event, long-term or large-scale building or infrastructure repair, or costs normally met by local or central government programs. These exclusions ensure that the fund remains focused on urgent, unmet needs and is used responsibly and fairly.
Donations from individuals, community groups, and businesses are welcomed to extend the fund’s capacity to support those affected, helping the city recover more quickly and ensuring that urgent needs can continue to be met.
