The Green Business Grant is designed to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and similar organizations purchase and install new products and equipment that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut utility costs, and improve energy efficiency.
The focus areas are as follows: A Green Business Grant is designed to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and other similar-sized organisations purchase and install new products and equipment that reduce your greenhouse gas emissions, cut your utility costs and improve your energy efficiency. If eligible, you will be able to apply for £200-£15,000 to cover between 30% and 60% of your costs depending on your business size and project type. If you are looking to make improvements but are unsure what would be best to do, they offer this support for free through their Carbon Survey scheme. Green Business Grants are part of the Mayoral Combined Authority’s Low Carbon Business Support, funded by the West of England Green Recovery Fund.
The Green Business Grant is available to small and medium-sized enterprises with fewer than 250 employees and a turnover of less than £36 million or a balance sheet of less than £18 million, operating in the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority region. Eligible organisations include private limited companies, sole traders, partnerships, community interest companies, community benefit societies, registered charities, and community amateur sports clubs. To qualify, applicants must be willing to undergo a credit check and provide financial documentation if necessary.
Projects must be based on recommendations from an independent carbon survey, must be capital investments aimed at reducing current carbon emissions, and must not be started until official authorization is given. The minimum grant request is £200 for micro-entities and £500 for other organizations. Eligible activities for funding include improvements to the energy efficiency or carbon emissions of buildings—such as insulation, heating, lighting, and glazing—purchases of energy-efficient or low-carbon operation equipment, and renewable generation measures like solar photovoltaic panels. The grant cannot be used for equipment reliant on fossil fuels, storage batteries, projects that are legally required, or transport-related initiatives.
Applicants need to provide a recent quote for the proposed works and submit detailed supporting documents through an online application. Once approved, work can proceed and must typically be completed within six months. The grant is paid in arrears after the completion and payment for the project, with supporting evidence required such as invoices, payment confirmations, and photographic proof of completion.
Applicants must follow specific procurement rules depending on the contract value, ensuring fair competition and full documentation for audit purposes. The application is assessed for value for money, deliverability, and financial viability, with clear criteria guiding these judgments. Recipients are expected to promote their projects and may be subject to monitoring visits to verify project implementation.
