The Starter Company Plus Grant – General Business Stream supports entrepreneurs in Toronto by providing training, mentoring, advisory services, and micro-grant funding of up to $5,000 to help small businesses grow and expand.
The focus areas include entrepreneurship development, small business growth, business expansion, startup support, mentoring, business advisory services, entrepreneurship training, financial support for small businesses, and support for locally operated businesses in Toronto.
The programme offers eligible entrepreneurs access to up to 15 hours of business training and up to three months of mentoring and advisory support.
Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents who are at least 18 years old and residing in Toronto. Participants must commit a minimum of 35 hours per week to their business activities and cannot be enrolled in school or other government-funded employment programmes during participation.
Eligible businesses must already be registered and operating in Toronto for a minimum of six months and a maximum of five years. Businesses must maintain a commercial business bank account, demonstrate financial activity, and provide proof of majority ownership and physical business address within Toronto.
Applicants are also required to demonstrate prior investment of at least 25 percent of the grant amount into the business through eligible business-related expenses such as marketing, rent, or equipment purchases.
The programme excludes several business categories, including charities, franchises, cryptocurrency businesses, seasonal businesses, childcare centres, cannabis-related businesses, fundraising platforms, and resellers of existing products from other manufacturers.
