RFAs: Screenplay Development for Feature and Long Animated Films

The focus areas of the opportunity are development of the film idea into a screenplay at an advanced stage, ensuring the foundations of the screenplay including theme, narrative structure, internal consistency, and main characters are laid, readiness for a final in-depth phase, emphasis on the creative team consisting of producer, director, and screenwriter, and support for both production companies and individual screenwriters.

This scheme supports the screenwriter, director, and producer in refining the screenplay. If the applicant is a production company, contributions include a maximum of €35,000 for the screenwriter, up to €10,500 for surcharges for multiple screenwriters or a co-writing director, up to €2,500 for a script coach or expert advisor depending on the substantiation of the work plan, up to €5,000 for directing work, and for long animation up to €10,000 for concept art, character development, and beat/storyboard. Producers may also request up to 15% producer fee and overhead on eligible development costs. If the applicant is a screenwriter, the maximum contribution is €35,000 for the screenwriter and up to €2,500 for a script coach or expert advisor.

Eligible applicants include independent production companies that have been established for at least two years in the Netherlands, an EU/EEA member state, or Switzerland, continuously producing films and audiovisual productions, and represented by a producer who has been primarily responsible for at least one independent, non-commissioned film production over 70 minutes in the professional Dutch film or television sector. Producers cannot also be the director or screenwriter of the film. Independent screenwriters who have previously been primarily responsible for a feature film or long animated film over 70 minutes released in Dutch cinemas can also apply.
