The Secure Communities Partnership Program offers funding for small and family businesses and local councils across Queensland to enhance safety and deter crime in commercial precincts.
The focus areas include supporting safety measures to deter crime against small and family businesses and create safer and more vibrant business areas. This initiative allocates $40 million to protect small and family businesses from crime and economic losses through the installation of vital safety and security infrastructure, improving the operating environment for these businesses across Queensland.
Small and family businesses can apply directly in designated project rounds, accessing funding to implement crime prevention measures such as alarms, surveillance systems and improved lighting. Local councils can also apply to deliver infrastructure upgrades across business strips and commercial precincts, thereby benefiting multiple small businesses in their regions.
In round two, small businesses impacted by crime are eligible for grants between $5,000 and $20,000, provided they meet criteria such as having fewer than 20 employees, an annual turnover of no more than $10 million, and having been significantly affected by crime in the last three years. Council-led projects under the programme may receive larger grants with a budget up to $400,000 per project, and local government applicants are required to consult with business stakeholders and law-enforcement agencies to ensure relevance and effectiveness of proposed measures.
