The Regional Economic Development (RED) Grants Program, supported by the State Government of Western Australia, invites applications for locally driven projects that contribute to economic growth and regional development through up to $250,000 in grant funding per project under a total allocation of $5 million.
The objectives of the RED Grants Program include sustainable jobs, expanding or diversifying industry, developing skills or capabilities, attracting new investment in the region, and increasing productivity.
The RED Grants Program is a State Government initiative that aims to strengthen regional Western Australia’s economic base by funding high-impact, community-driven projects. Delivered through the nine Regional Development Commissions (RDCs), each commission manages the grant process in its respective region, while the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) oversees the overall program.
Eligible applicants include legal entities with an Australian Business Number (ABN) and a registered financial account capable of entering into a legally binding agreement with the State Government. However, schools, hospitals, State or Federal Government agencies, and Government Trading Enterprises are not eligible to apply.
Applicants must demonstrate that their project meets at least one of the economic growth and development objectives. Projects must also show evidence of local collaboration, co-investment, and alignment with regional priorities. A minimum 50% cash contribution is required, though not-for-profit and Aboriginal-owned organisations may receive case-by-case consideration. Preference will be given to initiatives that build local supplier capability, generate employment, and support emerging industries within regional areas.
All applications will undergo a competitive, merit-based assessment managed by the RDCs, with final approval provided by the Minister for Regional Development. Successful applicants will enter into a Grant Agreement before commencing their projects, and all funds will be released progressively based on milestone completion. Recipients are required to submit a final audited report within twelve weeks of project completion to ensure accountability and alignment with approved outcomes.
The grant amount is subject to GST, and recipients must issue a tax invoice for the GST-inclusive amount. Applicants are advised to seek independent tax and financial advice regarding funding implications. Furthermore, all projects must comply with Aboriginal heritage protection laws under the Aboriginal Heritage Act (WA) 1972, demonstrating due diligence before any activity is undertaken on culturally significant land or sites.
