The European Commission is offering to develop and demonstrate cryo-cooled power electronics for fully electric hydrogen fuel cell aircraft to advance compact, efficient, and scalable propulsion systems.
The focus of this call is on the development and demonstration of cryo-cooled motor inverter power electronics at TRL5, reliability and performance validation, enabling more efficient, compact, and scalable cryogenic electric propulsion systems, and supporting the advancement of hydrogen fuel cell powered aircraft technologies.
This initiative seeks to push the boundaries of electric aviation by integrating cryogenic cooling technologies into motor inverters, improving energy efficiency, and reducing system size and weight. Projects funded under this call are expected to demonstrate technological readiness at TRL5 and provide validated solutions that can be scaled to future aircraft applications.
Eligible participants include any legal entity, regardless of location, including entities from non-associated third countries and international organizations, provided they meet the Horizon Europe regulations and any specific requirements outlined in the call. Legal entities may act in their own name and exercise rights and obligations or may participate without formal legal personality.
Funding for this initiative amounts to €329,500,000, aimed at supporting groundbreaking innovations in hydrogen-powered electric aviation and fostering collaborative research across international stakeholders.
