Caithness Business Fund is a private sector fund dedicated to driving economic growth across Caithness and Sutherland by supporting businesses and fostering skills development.
Its core mission is to strengthen the region’s business base, promote innovation, and create new opportunities for local businesses to thrive in an increasingly competitive market.
The fund provides Apprenticeship Grants to businesses that can demonstrate a strong commitment to hosting a modern apprenticeship, along with the provision of a supportive pathway and the desire to grow and create employment. Through the FutureSkills apprenticeship scheme, financial support of up to £24,500 over three years is available, although the exact grant awarded will vary depending on the needs of the business, the apprenticeship being undertaken, and the availability of any other funding.
Applicants must be small to medium-sized enterprises such as sole traders, partnerships, or limited companies based in the Caithness and North Sutherland area, defined as the Dounreay Travel to Work Area. The funding supports both new business startups and the development of existing businesses, whether through training, growth initiatives, or employing an apprentice. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate financial viability, while certain sectors such as alcohol, gambling, financial services, property development, weapons, primary agriculture including forestry, and activities with detrimental environmental impact or moral and ethical concerns are excluded from support.
Conditions of grant award include the requirement for applicants to supply progress reports as requested by Caithness Business Fund, agree to participate in any publicity regarding the grant, and avoid submitting applications for retrospective funding. The Fund may also place additional conditions on any given grant award depending on individual circumstances.
Applicants are encouraged to seek guidance during the application process, particularly with preparing business plans or financial documents. Application forms and guidelines are available for download, and further assistance can be obtained directly through the Fund’s management company.
