The Large-scale Production of Liquid Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin call aims to advance the large-scale production of liquid advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin to support the sustainable, secure, and competitive energy supply in line with the European Green Deal and climate neutrality objectives.
Focus areas include the large-scale production of liquid advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin to contribute to a low-carbon energy system transition, supporting the EU’s strategic objectives, including the Net-Zero Industry Act and the Clean Industrial Deal. The call aligns with the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) and aims to foster competitiveness, energy security, and integration of advanced biofuel value chains within a sustainable and circular economy framework.
The article discusses the urgent need to scale up production of sustainable liquid advanced biofuels and renewable fuels of non-biological origin, which are crucial for decarbonizing sectors where direct electrification is challenging. These fuels provide an alternative to fossil fuels and support the EU’s ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The call underlines the importance of innovative production technologies that optimize resource use, enhance process efficiency, and reduce environmental impacts.
The initiative also stresses the integration of renewable fuels within existing energy infrastructures and value chains, ensuring their compatibility with current systems while fostering new supply chains. It encourages research and innovation activities that address the entire value chain from feedstock sourcing to fuel production and end-use applications, emphasizing sustainability and circularity.
Proposals are expected to demonstrate advances in Technology Readiness Levels, scalability potential, and cost-effectiveness of production processes. They should also consider environmental sustainability, social acceptability, and economic viability. The call promotes collaboration across industries, research institutions, and stakeholders to build robust ecosystems for renewable fuel production.
To support the European Union’s climate and energy policy goals, the projects funded under this call will contribute to job creation, industrial competitiveness, and green transition, underpinning a resilient and strategically autonomous energy sector. The integration of digital technologies and societal readiness aspects is also encouraged to foster acceptance and market uptake.
The Commission estimates that an EU contribution of around EUR 11.00 million would allow these outcomes to be addressed appropriately. Nonetheless, this does not preclude submission and selection of a proposal requesting different amounts.
The total indicative budget for the topic is EUR 33.00 million.
